F A Q

Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?
Teeth, and sometimes entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. It is important that treatment be appropriately administered and properly completed. Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments.
Is a referral from my dentist necessary?
No, it isn’t. Many of our patients are referred by their family dentists, but many take the initiative and schedule a first visit themselves.
At what age should I schedule an appointment for an orthodontic screening?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends screening at age 7. By this time, several permanent teeth have usually erupted, which will allow for an effective evaluation.

How do I schedule an initial exam?

Simply call our office in Starkville at 662.323.8065 or in Louisville at 662.773.6215, or send an E-MAIL to schedule an initial exam.

What will happen at the initial examination?
Each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and Dr. McReynolds who will acclimate you to our office. We will take necessary photos and x-rays to properly diagnose your need. Dr. McReynolds will complete a brief, but thorough, exam and provide a recommended course of action. For more information, review our FIRST VISIT page.
How much do braces cost? Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?

It’s impossible to estimate the cost until we have evaluated your need and the amount of work required to straighten your teeth. However, we will cover the exact cost and financial options during the initial exam. We have several financing options available, and we will review those with you. We will also review your insurance policy to help maximize your benefit and file your claims on your behalf.

Can I schedule all my appointments after school?
We are not able to schedule all of our patients for after school appointments. But because most patients have appointments only 4 to 6 weeks apart, minimal time away from school will be incurred. We will do our best to accommodate your scheduling needs.
How often will I have appointments?
Appointments are scheduled based on each patient’s needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every 4 to 6 weeks.
Can I return to school the day I receive my braces?
Yes.
Do you use recycled braces?
No. It is our belief that each patient should be provided with custom braces to achieve the best results.
Can I still play sports?
Yes. We recommend a mouth guard for all sports.
Do I need to see a family dentist while in braces?
Yes. Regular checkups with your family dentist are important while in braces. Your dentist will determine the intervals between cleaning appointments while you are in braces.
Are there foods I cannot eat while in braces?

Yes. Once treatment begins, we will share complete instructions with you and provide a comprehensive list of foods to avoid, which includes ice, hard candy, raw vegetables and all sticky foods (i.e.: taffy, caramel). You can avoid most emergency repairs to broken or damaged braces by carefully following our instructions.

How often should I brush my teeth while in braces?
You should brush your teeth twice a day. We will show you how to floss as well.
What is an emergency appointment? How are those handled?
If your braces are causing extreme pain or if something breaks, you should call our office. In most cases we can address the issue over the phone.
Is it too late to have braces if I’m an adult?
A surprising number of our patients are adults. In fact, 25 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults. No patient is too old!
Can I wear braces even though I have crowns and missing teeth?
Yes. A tooth with a crown will move just like a tooth a simple filling. When teeth are missing, orthodontic treatment will aid in the alignment of the remaining teeth.
